Magical
Space
In the same way that our time can be a bit full, so can our
surroundings. For some people their magical space is a circle
in the garden, for others simply a bubble that surrounds where
they sit. The same thing goes for your altar. For some it
is a dedicated table, for others the corner of a shelf. You
will know what feels right to you. The size of your magical
space will be mostly decided by how much room you have and
the kind of ritual you intend to do. If you have limited space,
want to take your magic outdoors or need to change venues
here is a quick idea I have used.
A Magic Mat
Find yourself a piece of cloth large enough for you to sit
upon in a comfortable position. This could be a large scarf
or material from a haberdasher but I would suggest it is one
that can be washed easily if you intend to use it both indoors
and out. Take your time in deciding what colour you want,
whether it should be patterned or plain. If your magic is
nature based, perhaps pick something with a leaf pattern or
in a rich forest green. If you tend towards one of the elements
pick a colour or pattern that reminds you of it - clouds,
waves, flames, flowers.
Decide what shape you want - a square, star or round for a
circle
Decorate your cloth with fabric paints or embroidery in magical
symbols or leave it plain and uncluttered, whichever feels
right to you.
Once completed your mat will need cleansing. This can be done
in many ways such as hanging it out in the wind, laying it
on the ground with stones or crystals upon it, smudging it
with incense or washing it under running water.
Once cleansed the mat should be hung out in the sunshine for
a day and in the moonlight for one night to charge it with
these energies. The mat can also be charged in a thunderstorm,
during an eclipse, in snow, rain or by any means which you
use to raise power. This cleansing and charging can be done
at regular intervals to both physically clean the mat and
also to stop it becoming too overloaded with many different
types of magic.
This mat can be used to sit upon to do magic or to lay out
your altar times both inside and outside the house. By using
it you are creating a scared space wherever you are. I have
even taken mine abroad with me.
