The Witches God
How do I choose my God & Goddess?
The Witches Goddess
Choosing your God & Goddess can be difficult to grasp for anyone who is new to their path, and has little to no concept, of who or what the Gods & Goddesses are and what they mean to them. In this situation, the first thing to do is hit the books or the internet and do some reading, use the information to familiarise yourself with a selection of Gods & Goddesses and the different Pantheons. It will then be easier to select a Pantheon that appeals to you and from there you can focus on individual Gods & Goddesses within that Pantheon and see which ones 'speak' to you. It may be that Isis and Cernunnos appeal to you, both are from different Pantheons but that doesn't matter, your guiding Deities don't have to be from the same Pantheon. Nor do they have to be the only ones you work with in the future.

There's a lot of confusion caused by the sheer number of Deities to choose from, but don't get to bogged down with the choice. If you think that working through all the different Pantheons to find 'the one' is too difficult to start, then just think of the God & Goddess as single entities, you may decide this works for you and continue this way on your Path for good. Many people do, there is a belief amongst some Pagans that all Gods are one God, and all Goddesses are one Goddess, meaning that it doesn't matter which Deity you work with as they're all really the same ones. Whatever anybody tells you, there is absolutely nothing wrong with worshipping one God and Goddess. When I first started on my Path I was very unsure, in ritual, and when seeking guidance I simply referred to them as the Lord & Lady.

In time, my God & Goddess made themselves known to me (see below). Today I work with a variety of Gods & Goddesses depending on what spell or ritual I'm doing. If you feel that you want to work with more than one God & Goddess, and feel that they are all individual and not just one and that you would prefer to work with one specific God or Goddess or a set of Gods & Goddesses then you can, but how do you choose?

Like I discussed in the opening paragraph, books and the internet are a good start, another way is to meditate, and ask that a your God & Goddess make themselves known to you. Then watch your life carefully for any signs of the God and Goddess trying to get your attention. Don't forget that the Path you've chosen is unique and personal to you and experiences are different from one person to the next. So if there doesn't seem to be any signs or you can't master the art of meditation, then it's up to you to take the matters into your own hands, and find your God & Goddess yourself. Look again at the various Pantheons and get a feel for them. Choose a God or Goddess that you feel would suit you, for example if you have an afinity with cats and Egypt, Bast would be an ideal candidate to research for your Goddess. Don't choose based on some immediate concern, if you're having problems on the love front, Venus would not be impressed if you choose her just to try and get some love in your life. Think long term when you're making your choice, after all you're going to be developing a long-term relationship with the God & Goddess you choose. Learn everything you can about them and then approach them. Invite them to your rituals, add items to your altar that reflect their qualities, use their names in prayers and spend more time trying to connect with them.

How I Found My God & Goddess - Moonshadow

I thought it would take me ages to find my God & Goddess, but after only a year on my Path, I went to sleep one night and had a dream. I thought I'd recount the dream here for others to see. When I think about who I am, and the path my life has taken, my hobbies and interests, it makes absolute sense for me to be guided by these two Deities, brief details of both of them appear after the dream.

"I was on the edge of a green wood with a leafy path spiralling into it through an arched shaped break in the trees, through the break I saw a stag sat alongside a boar. I thought it was curious so I started to walk onto the path as I got closer the stag and boar got up and changed form into a man and woman the man had horns and was dressed in a robe of leaves and twigs the woman was dressed the same (no horns though) and appeared to look different ages as you looked at her. Young, middle aged and old alternately and at the same time, her face didn't physically change I just you got the perception that she was three people in one. I continued to walk towards them feeling at peace, warm and happy and they held out their hands beckoning me to walk with them they introduced themselves by name we walked and talked and after a long time they said they had to go but that they wouldn't be far away and then faded into the trees, as they did that the stag and boar appeared again and walked with me further into the wood, I woke up at that point crying, tears of happiness' for the longest time on my path I felt alone now I feel like I belong and it's wonderful."
Cernunnos
Cernunnos

Cernunnos "The Horned One" is a Celtic god of fertility, life, animals, wealth, and the underworld. The Horned God is born at the winter solstice, marries the goddess at Beltane, and dies at the summer solstice. He alternates with the goddess of the moon in ruling over life and death, continuing the cycle of death, rebirth and reincarnation.

Very little is known about Cernunnos except his name and his image, which appears on numerous stonecarvings and other artifacts throughout Europe. He appears crowned with stag's antlers, is often seated in a meditative position, and is almost always depicted with images of wild animals.
Cerridwen

Associated with the feminine symbols of water and the Moon, is the shape-shifting Celtic Goddess of inspiration, wisdom, and the magical arts of enchantment, divination, and prophecy.

Cerridwen can be considered a Dark Mother Goddess as she is a mother, but also possesses the wisdom of the Crone - she is wise in magic and astrological correspondences and herbs and potion brewing - she is most definitely a Witch. She gets angry, fights and is passionate about her cause - these are strong dark qualities. Because of her wisdom and magic, Cerridwen can aid in many forms of magic.
